The NYC Village Halloween Parade not quite your thing? Head in the opposite direction to El Museo del Barrio (1230 5th ave at 104th Street) for Day of the Dead Festivities.
Saturday, October 31st
11 am to 10:30 pm
El Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is a Mexican celebration that coincides with the Catholic holidays of All Saints Day (Nov. 1st) and All Souls Day (Nov. 2nd) but has roots in indigenous practices said to be more than 3000 years old. The holiday is a time to memorialize loved ones who have passed on.
The museum will host activities starting at 11 am until 10:30 pm. Highlights include a food tasting from 12 to 2pm, calavera (Skull) face painting & portraits, Mariachi music from 3 to 4:30, as well as evening theater performances. All events are free. For more details, events and times go to the event web site.
