I've said it before and it still remains true, the holidays are my favorite time of year in the Big Apple. I have my dad to thank for that.

As soon as the city's retailers and communities began to roll out their decorations, Papi would start taking me for evening walks down 5th avenue so that we could take pictures in front of the Rockefeller Center tree and make our way down to Macy's, where he never tired of waiting in line with me to see Santa.

If you looked into Papi's eyes while he watched Christmas TV specials, stared at our home decorations, or marveled at the city lights that multiplied in December, you could see the happiness it instilled in him. I fed off of his love of the holidays. He made me the Holiday Cheerleader I am today.

This year as Holiday Cheerleader, I've had the pleasure of introducing my significant other to some of my favorite traditions. I was horrified to learn that he had never watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade or visited Santa (he reminds me he's Jewish, but I'm still distraught), so those two items have now been checked off the list. Next up, a walking tour of the 5th Avenue lights like good old days. I went on a reconnaissance mission this past weekend to identify some highlights and snagged some pictures to share with you all. He better put on his walking shoes and channel his best festive attitude a la Papi, because it's on!

Unexpected Inspiration at #Latism11 Conference

I know that I usually focus my posts on the tangible things in my NYC existence (events, deals, giveaways, etc), but today I’m getting a bit personal. I’m still talking about the “free things in life” but with a twist. Specifically, the important life lessons that are gifted to us, often when we least expect them. I was attending the #Latism (Latinos in Social Media) conference in Chicago this past week and in the closing keynote found a dose of inspiration that seemed to be heaven sent. Before I get to the keynote a little background information is required.

I lost both of my parents to cancer within a year of each other and it changed my life profoundly. They were my best friends, my roommates, my travel buddies and amazingly loving people. I made a promise to myself after each of their deaths, to not allow sadness to overwhelm me on days like birthdays and anniversaries, but rather to utilize those occasions as opportunities to think of them more intentionally than every other day and focus on the wonderful memories of them.

November 11, 2011 marked three years since my mother’s passing. I took a moment to share some warm thoughts on Facebook with my sister, who currently lives in Japan. I smiled to the heavens several times recalling my mother’s unforgettable embrace and her indefatigable message that I could accomplish anything I wanted to because she had. You’re probably thinking “all good moms say that to their kids.” True, but when my mom said it, you had to take into account that she contracted polio at the age of 2 and lost all mobility in her legs. That until she came to this country from Peru at the age of 12, she got around by dragging herself on the floor or being carried by family members and that her first home in New York was Bellevue hospital, where she underwent about a dozen surgeries to straighten her legs and went through months of physical therapy to learn how to walk with leg braces and crutches. Despite minimal education and physical constraints, mami had a good paying job building radios, she found love, she married, raised two daughters with no assistance and did too many other amazing things to list in this one post.

Now back to that closing key note address at the #Latism conference. One of the mantras that has gotten me through the tough times has been everything happens for a reason. There was a reason I was at this conference and it went beyond the great networking, community building and professional development I expected. I was there to hear Tony Melendez share his story and in the process, hear my mom and feel her presence. Tony is a talented guitarist who has played for the likes of Pope John Paul II and touches all who see him perform because he has mastered his craft despite being born without arms.

Tony shared so much with us but it all boiled down to one truth and that is that we can do whatever we set our minds to, that there is always “a way.” He, like mami, accomplished what many probably would have said was impossible. Listening to Tony rekindled that sense of inspiration I felt every time I heard mami’s personal stories. I heard her voice in his that evening, felt her looking down on me and telling me “Mijita, you’ll achieve whatever you want to.”

Thank you Tony for being her messenger. Thank you #Latism for bringing Tony and I together. Gracias mami for being my guiding star always. Te extraño aunque se que no estas lejos.

Highline Update: Channel the Roller Derby Days

I am remiss for neglecting you my loyal readers. I hope that in the midst of my silence you've found some exciting NYC events of your own. One of my favorite developments has been the opening of the 2nd section of the Highline, which is drawing attention and traffic to a long neglected far west side between 23rd & 30th Streets.

If you've already made a visit to section 2, you have undoubtedly seen or visited The Lot, located under the 30th St. Highline entrance. This welcomed outdoor social space is serving up some delicious libations by way of Colicchio and Sons (draft beers & wines) and has food offerings from some of the hottest food trucks around, including Taim Falafel (best I've had).

Starting next Thursday, July 28th, the space adjoined to The Lot (and currently occupied by some freaky looking AOL balloons) will be converted to a Roller Rink by Japanese clothing chain Uniqlo. Admission, which includes skate rental, will be $12 for Adults and $10 for kids under 13. [Via ny.racked.com]

If you don't want to shell out the money it may still be worth checking out for the people watching alone!

Lower Feast Side Food Festival

2011 Opening Day at the Hester Street Fair is Saturday May 7th. It's going to be a food filled frenzy of a day aptly titled the Lower Feast Side Food Festival. Half of the market spaces will be food vendors (foodies rejoice!) while the other half will have goods for the shoppers amongst us (I rejoice here too). I am looking forward to a Melt Bakery ice cream sandwich because sadly I only discovered them at the tail end of last summer.

Frito Lay Flavor Kitchen in Times Square

Frito Lay has set up their Flavor Kitchen in Times Square. From April 11th to the 15th from 11 am to 2 pm, you can catch a variety of celebrity cooks in the kitchen atop the marquee of the Hard Rock Cafe, 1501 Broadway at 43rd Street.

If you cannot head over there to check it out in person you can watch the cooking demonstrations below via this livestream video link. The recipes that are being demoed are part of Frito Lay's continued shift toward all natural ingredients in their products.

My apologies for the lack of posts in the last month. I've been in the midst of an apartment switch, but am beginning to settle into the new place and ready to bring you highlights of events and deals in this fabulous city of our. There were some money and time saving lessons learned during this process that I'll share with you.

#1 Never Pay For Boxes There are free boxes to be had, you just have to look. My local supermarket was not the ideal place for boxes. Their boxes seemed icky (very technical moving term) or lacked full covered bottoms. The best sources in my neighborhood were Whole Foods and Starbucks. Ask what days of the week they receive shipments and the best time to come back for boxes and you'll hit the mother load.

#2 Spend the money on the good packing tape This is not the item to be a cheapskate on. My preferred brand of packing tape is the Duck Brand. Can't go wrong there. I went through about 4 rolls for a 2 bedroom apartment.

#3 Pack It In Boxes No Matter the Distance So you say you're only moving downstairs and you don't need to pack it all up? WRONG!!! Regardless of the distance, packing your belongings in boxes makes the moving process faster and more orderly and limits the likelihood of damages. Boxes are much easier to port than bags and other odd shapes. It also makes settling into your new place easier because you can itemize contents on the outside of the box, which facilitates finding things as you unpack.

#4 Donate Unwanted Items There are so many people in this city who could use that furniture that just won't fit in the new place or those clothes you don't really wear anymore. Give directly by posting on pages like http://newyork.craigslist.org/ or the Freecycle NYC yahoo group. There are also a bunch of Thrift shops that will take your donations and resell them to raise money for a variety of worthy causes. My favorite is Housing Works which has thrift stores located all over Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. Click here for location info.

"Food Glorious Food... " Oliver and the rest of the gang would find it in Brooklyn this Saturday, February 12th.

I was reading the latest issue of Time Out New York and saw that the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) is hosting The Red Velvet Show: Red Velvet Cake Contest. Brooklyn bakers will face off at high noon and a winner will be chosen. You can enter your own cake by emailing jeloisehooper@aol.com or just go to enjoy the free samples and hot apple cider. The contest is part of a two day Red Show, a Valentine's Day Holiday Craft Show.

Dovetail: Restaurant Week Heaven

Chef John Fraser of Upper West Side Restaurant Dovetail should teach a course on how to to design a restaurant week menu. Most Restaurant Week aficionados will tell you that you have to review the menus before making your venue decisions. It's here that you'll get your first indication of whether or not the food offerings are on par with the a la carte menu. I new to expect deliciousness because I could see myself enjoying any combination of the course options. [View Dovetail's RW Lunch Menu]

I know many people who, like me, use Restaurant Week as an audition of sorts. If they're impressed they will be willing to return and spend they're hard earned money because they know it will be a worthwhile experience. Not only will I go back to Dovetail any chance I get, but I will preach the food gospel of Chef Fraser.

The beauty of Fraser's food is that the vegetables are not just filler, they are just as delectable and usually more inventive than the proteins. The creamy risotto with duck confit was mouth watering but it's the pear and parsnip soup with truffle marshmallows and almonds that I most wish I could recreate at home. The succulent braised lamb was a star and the accompanying spaghetti squash puree, which I'm convinced had strawberry Greek yogurt in it, rocked my world. And while, many a RW experience has failed to close the deal with dessert (i.e. boring creme brulee, plain jane chocolate cake) the proverbial ball was hit out of the park. Beer ice cream. Need I say more?

Living In A Macy's Window

I saw Mike Birbiglia perform a couple of years ago at a Comedy Central event and thought he was a super funny guy. I'm not quite sure how that prepares him to live in a Macy's Window, but that is indeed what the comedian will be doing for a week starting today.

Birbiglia will live as a window display at the famed department store as a bizarre marketing promo for Downy fabric softener. P&G, the makers of Downy, claim that using the product will keep sheets fresh for a week and make sleeping more attractive, even for a professed sleepwalker like Birbiglia (Wall Street Journal).

So I guess the message is that if you stop by to stare at the funny guy in the window and he looks well rested, you should go buy yourself some Downy. It's a stretch but I'll probably go check it out anyway.

In 2009 Eddie Huang entered the Food Network's Ultimate Recipe Challenge with his reinterpretation of the Taiwanese Baozi/Mantou (think sandwiches with doughy buns) made in his family for 3 generations. Becoming a finalist on the show prompted him to use the recipe to launch his own eatery in NYC, Baohaus, which will be 1 year old on Monday.

In a blog post detailing the trials and triumphs of the first year, Eddie also announces that in celebration of the anniversary Chairman, Uncle Jesse, and Birdhaus Baos will be $1 each (there is a 3 Bao max per person). Take a trip back in time any any Sunday until December 26th thanks to the MTA. Sure we all have our MTA gripes but here's something you can like them for. Riders on the 6th Avenue M line between the 2nd Avenue and Queens Plaza stations. The holiday "Nostalgia Train" will operate on Sundays only, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., from November 28th to December 26th (MTA).

Nostalgia buses will will operate along the B1 and B65 in Brooklyn; S61 in Staten Island; Q13 and Q46 in Queens; M34 and M42 in Manhattan and the Bx7 and Bx30 in the Bronx.

NYC Holiday Lights 2010

Tonight's lighting of the Rockefeller Center Tree is a symbolic start of holiday celebration for people tuning in nationwide via their tvs and computers. Despite living in Manhattan and having easy access to Rock Center, I can't bear the crowd and choose to watch from the comfort of my couch with a mug of peppermint hot chocolate in hand.

But what's a holiday fanatic to do when you still have a need to scratch the community-tree/menorah-lighting-itch? Find a more manageable event! Here are a few of my picks:

Grand Army Plaza Menorah
Sunday, December 1-8 at 5:30 pm
NYC boasts the world's largest menorah and it's home is in Brooklyn at Grand Army Plaza. Hannukah starts this Wednesday and thus the first candle on the menorah will be lit, joined by another each night for eight nights. Every night you can enjoy folk dancing and sufganiyot (holiday jelly doughnuts) but Sunday's lighting will include music, gelt for children and hot latkes. (About.com).

Columbia University Tree Lighting
Thursday, December 2nd
Head to College Walk (116th St and Broadway) and partake in the University's annual tradition. Enjoy performances by various student groups. Not sure of the time yet, but I'm guessing around nightfall. Update to come.

Woodside Tree Lighting

Saturday, December 4th at 6pm
The Woodside community tree will be in Sohncke Square Park (58^th Street between Roosevelt & Woodside Avenues). Warm up with some hot chocolate and cookies while listening to carolers and waiting for the the guest of honor, Santa.

Madison Square Holiday
Tuesday, December 7th at 4:30 pm
The tree in Madison Square has been a tradition since 1912. The tree lighting at nightfall, treats will be provided by Benvenuto Caffe Restaurant, and family friendly holiday music will fill the air. The tree will be located at the Northern Reflecting Pool in Madison Square Park.

Winter's Eve at Lincoln Square

One of my favorite Holiday events is tonight, Winter's Eve at Lincoln Square. The celebration surrounds the lighting of the Lincoln Square tree and is a food lovers dream. More than two dozen of the areas eateries will be offering tastings ranging from free to $5. It's generally the one time per year I get food from Bar Masa. Plan ahead and have some singles and fives in your wallet for faster transactions.

In addition to the participating restaurants,
several of the neighborhood retailers will be offering in-store snacks and specials (e.g. Free admission at the American Folk Art Museum, 20% off at Kiehls, Free Guest day at NY Sports Club and more)

Divide and conquer is a great strategy for tackling the food lines. Get in the holiday spirit to psych yourself up for the lines (if your a humbug stay home and don't ruin it for the rest of us. Be sure to catch some of the entertainment too. Awesome band Red Baraat will be performing at 7pm inside the David Rubenstein Atrium. Ukrainian and Georgian Wines in Greenpoint

On discovery day in Greenpoint Brooklyn this summer, my partner & fellow foodie "E" was struck by a liquor store window displaying an assortment of alcohol bottles in the forms of rifles, guns, and other ammo. As we stood there and took in the scene, a friendly chain-smoking gentleman (later identified as Chris, whose wife owns the shop) came out to chat us up and gauge our interest in the purchase of an item on display. An hour or so later, we had been shown bottles in other interesting designs ranging from horses to male organs and chatted politics with Chris (who is a die-hard Obama supporter), we had also sampled some delicious fruity wines from the Ukraine and purchased a semi-sweet Georgian wine.

Chizay Wineberry Line - The Apricot was our favorite but the other flavors were also worth a buy.

Grammy Collection Khvanchkara - A red semi sweet wine from the oldest wine producing region of the world (wikipedia). We bought our in a fun ceramic carafe. This is supposedly one of the best known Georgian wines.

The bottles we bought sat in the kitchen for a bit but were finally cracked open over the last month. These semi-sweet wines are a good accompaniment for takeout or dessert and are inexpensive to boot ($10 or less per bottle). If you go to Greenpoint to buy your wines from Chris, you may even have some fun stories to reminisce over as you sip. His window display creativity made the news last Easter when he used live chicks. Read about it on Gothamist .com.

Lennon's Birthday Documentary Screening

Masterful musician John Lennon would be celebrating his 70th Birthday if he was still with us. To mark the day, WNET (PBS, Channel 13) has organized a free screening of the documentary American Masters: LENNONNYC on Saturday, October 9th at 7 pm at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. As the title suggests, the film explores Lennon's life in NYC with his wife Yoko and son Sean.

Doors open at 6pm but I would imagine there will be quite the draw, so get there early. If you haven't been to Summerstage before, it's picnic style so bring a blanket (no chairs allowed) and snacks (no glass containers).

Lessons from Maker Faire: Upcycling

Upcycling - A term coined by William McDonaugh and Michael Braungart. The process of converting an industrial nutrient (material) into something of similar or greater value, in its second life. Aluminum and glass, for example, can usually be upcycled into the same quality of aluminum and glass as the original products. (SustainableDictionary.com)

Whether we knew the official term or not, most of us are familiar with upcycling. I know that separating my recyclables creates opportunity for others to find new uses for the materials, but I have become increasingly interested in finding ways to do the upcycling myself. To this end, I was exposed to a few cool DIY projects utilizing some of these materials. All of these ideas were presented at Maker Faire NYC by Brooklyn based RePlayGround.com. There are a bunch of other cool projects on their site so be sure to pay them a visit.

Soda Tab Belts Bracelets - I've seen people wear stranger things. This is a simple enough DIY project for your favorite kiddies or any neophyte crafter looking to get those feet wet. Instructions for the bracelet pictured here are available on the DIY Network site.

Food Wrapper Gift Bows - This one gave me visions of making gift bows with wrappers all year round and having enough for all of my holiday gifting. Experiencing The Food of Malaysia

There are so many great lunch deals in this City and I feel as if a large concentration of those can be found in or near Chinatown. I met up with two of my cousins last week at Malaysian restaurant Nyonya (199 Grand Street, Bet Mott & Mulberry Sts) and found one that's new to me.

Nyonya has a lunch special menu with 16 dishes all including a soup appetizer and costing only $6.50. I had the Beef Masak Lemak over rice, which was this delicious dish chock full of flavor from peppers, onions, chilies, garlic, and ginger. The Roti Canai appetizer (Indian pancake) with curry chicken dipping sauce is a must have and a bargain at $3.50. The noodle dishes are also great and all $7.50 or under at all times, not just for lunch.

My visit to Nyonya seems timely given the upcoming launch of the Malaysian Kitchen Food Truck (website), a marketing vehicle for NYC Malaysian restaurants including the aforementioned Nyonya and the well-known Fatty Crab.

The truck will treat New Yorkers to free samples of Malaysian dishes for six weeks starting October 11th. The truck will venture around Manhattan until November 6th and then grace the people of Queens with the Food truck gifts from November 8th to 19th.

Can We Make That At Home?

If you follow me on twitter you might recall me raving about my Restaurant Week meal at Le Cirque this summer. While $35 per person is a steal for a meal there, it's still not something an amount that my partner and I can afford to dole out on a regular basis. Then there's also the fact that the dish we fell in love with (Pistachio encrusted lamb fillet with goat cheese, pea, and mint puree) is not on the regular menu. So, what are two foodies to do when they crave said fabulous dish? Try to recreate it at home.

I recall that as we sat there at Le Cirque we thought that the dish seemed so simple and straight forward we might actually be able to pull it off. Last night, with only the menu description to work with, we finally attempted it. I put together a recipe by researching cooking techniques for lamb steaks, pistachio crusts, and fresh peas. Below is the recipe we ended up with. The results were awesome!! We relived our Le Cirque meal (with bigger portion sizes), didn't break the bank (we also have left over ingredients), and added a new special recipe to our cooking repertoire.

Ingredients

Lamb Round Steaks from Leg: this was our substitute for the ridiculously expensive lamb fillet. We bought 3 steaks for about $11 at Whole Foods.
Roasted Salted Pistachios: After the lamb this was the 2nd priciest item ($8). We used about 3/4 cup (about 1/2 lb. have and ground them in my blender (because I need a food processor) to about the consistency of bread crumbs.
Goat Cheese: A 4oz package was $3.99 and we used less than half.
Fresh Peas: You need about a cup after shucking.
Mint: About 20 leaves or to your taste (we love mint so we use more).
Olive oil: For pan frying the lamb.
Salt and Pepper: For seasoning the lamb.
Water: For the pea puree.

The lamb steaks are on the thick side so you should pound them down to about an inch using a kitchen mallet or rolling pin. Season them with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat the olive oil in a pan. Add the lamb steaks and cooking until medium, about 5 minutes per side. Remove the steaks but keep the pan on. Roll each steak in the ground pistachio nuts. Return the lamb to the pan to sear each side about 30 seconds. This will bring out the flavor of the pistachio nuts.

For the puree: Using a food processor, immersion blender, or regular blender (if you must), combine the peas, hand-shredded mint leaves, and goat cheese and water to make a puree. Add the water about a tablespoon at a time so that you do not get a watery consistency. Adjust the ingredients according to your taste and desired consistency. Serve as an accompaniment to the lamb.

New York Film Festival - Rush Tickets

The Film Society of Lincoln Center is preparing for the 48th Annual New York Film Festival, which highlights films and filmmakers from around the world. The festival begins this Friday, September 24th and runs through October 10th.

With a regular ticket price of $20 for all films on the main slate, the festival is not easy on the wallet. However there are a limited number of rush tickets available for half the price ($10) starting 1 hour before each film. Each person can purchase up to two tickets.

Fall is in the air and to me that means apples. I'm hoping to get the opportunity to go picking upstate but for a day we can pretend that there's an orchard on the Lower East Side. New York City Apple Day is exactly what it sounds like, an opportunity to basque in all things apple: fresh apples, apple cider, apple pie, apple butter, etc. I'm curious about what local businesses like Baby Cakes and The Roasting Plant will whip up.

You can't have a festival without music, so expect performances by some folks I don't know anything about and so thus can't provide more info about. (Names are on the event website I linked to above.

NYC Fashion Week has shifted locations from Bryant park to Lincoln Center, but that's not the only new addition to this high profile event. Bon Apetit magazine is hosting an on-site cafe that is open to the public and features dishes crafted by what I would call "designer" chefs, chefs who have reached celebrity status. Like Iron Chefs Cat Cora & Mario Batali? How about Top Chef Masters Season 1 winner Rick Bayless? They all have dishes on the cafe's menu.

Now, I don't know how large the portions will be (I wonder if that pic represents 3 sammies or 1?), but most of the food is priced under $10.

The New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) and HBO Documentary Films are hosting a free outdoor screening of "El Espiritu de la Salsa."

I got to see the World Premiere of this film at the Tribeca Film Festival Drive-In a few months ago and highly recommend it. You don't have to be a Salsa fan to enjoy the film which tells the story of "lonely-hearts" students at a salsa dance studio in El Barrio (Spanish Harlem). At points it is laugh out-loud funny and an overall great time. If you do love salsa music, then it's just an added bonus.

Restaurant Week Is Not Over Yet!

It's now been almost 3 weeks since I tried to encourage you to make Summer Restaurant Week Reservations. I shared some of my fond memories of restaurant weeks past in the hopes that you would want to create some food memories of your own. I warned you about making early reservations so as not to get shut out, but did you? If you've been feeling as the golden opportunity has passed you by, fear not!! There is still some fantastically affordable yet fancy feeding to be done especially if you're up for a lunch reservation.

In addition to being great because it's easier to get reservations, RW are the only way to enjoy a prixe fixe RW meal at some restaurants like Craftbar and Quality Meats (Scallops and Hangar Steak!). I did some quick searching on Opentable.com and there are prime time lunch spots waiting for you at the aforementioned restaurants and some others.

It's not too late for dinner either. I even saw a few spots open later this week at the very classy Petrossian, whose RW menu looks outstanding (If I were going I'd get the Smoked Fish and Beet Tartare, Duck Confit Leg, and Red Fruit Mousse).

What's that you say? No one to go with? That could be even better. Many places will offer the RW menu at the bar. Call ahead and find out. The beauty of a bar seat is that you can get it without a reservation.

Not too late to see the Giglio Lift

The 123rd Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Feast is underway in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Also referred to as The Feast of the Giglio, this century-old religious and cultural feast is noted for the tradition of lifting the Giglio tower, a 4 ton structural structural tribute to Saint Paolino. The feast and its namesakes have quite a history that you can read more about on the website.

If you want to see one of the ceremonial and incredibly orchestrated Giglio lifts you can head over tomorrow night, June 14th. The festival lines the streets in front of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church (275 N 8th St, Williamsburg) until Sunday July 18th, when the Giglio structure will be dismantled and stored until next year.

Grand Openings: Harlem Target & Chelsea Trader Joe's

While I was born, raised and lived in NYC most of my life, I did live on the Central Coast of California for 3 years. To that time I owe my fanaticism with Trader Joe's. The Union Square location isn't so terrible to get to from my home on the west side of Manhattan, but the lines make the travel for groceries fairly unappealing and a trip a choose to make only occasionally.

Enter Trader Joe's Chelsea. I was first alerted to the store's plans to open it's doors at 675 6th Avenue via a Facebook message from a friend. Thinking it was too good to believe I walked myself over there to make sure and was pleased with the confirmation.

I stopped by yesterday in the hopes of getting a better sense of when the grand opening would be and was overjoyed to learn that starting at 8 am this Monday, July 12th I can get my Trader Joe's favorites in Chelsea. I don't know if there will be any grand opening special offerings, but I'll be satisfied with their mere presence.

While my dream would be a Target withing walking distance, the opening of Target's first Manhattan store is still exciting.

Opening Sunday, June 25th the retailer says the Harlem store's merchandise offerings have been tailored "to include a generous selection of multicultural offerings including Spanish language and Ebony greeting cards, Gospel and Latin music, Spanish language books and movies, religious candles and a large assortment of multicultural dolls." Have to admit, I'm a bit conflicted about that. I don't want small mom and pop shops going out of business but there are some things Target offers that are not readily available to this community that Target will now offer.

There's just something about friends, a summer picnic and live Opera music that seems soooo right. This summer we have five opportunities to capture that perfect ambiance with Summer Recital Series performances by the world renowned Metropolitan Opera. If you've never been to the Opera and are not quite sure it's your cup of tea, this is definitely for you. Concerts like these are all about exposing us to the unfamiliar in the hopes of generating some new fans. Most of the concerts are on Friday nights making them a fitting vehicle for easing into the weekend after a long work week.

Summer Restaurant Week

Summer Restaurant week starts July 12th and reservations at the top spots are going fast if not gone already. It's not too late! I've got two reservations last night.

I will make revisit to Morimoto for lunch; I have fond memories of the Kobe Beef Bento Box I ate there a few years ago and have been itching to go back. The second res is for Le Cirque. I used to eat leftovers from the original Le Cirque while I was a kid because my dad worked at the hotel where it was located, but I've never actually been a patron. There Restaurant Week dinner menu looks fantastic so I'm hoping it doesn't disappoint. Will it be the Pistachio Crusted Lamb Filet or the Sauteed Beef Medallions? Decisions Decisions.

Camping in Central Park

One of the people I work with told me about his camping experience in Central Park this past weekend. I couldn't believe that I had never heard about this. I was born and raised in NYC and was never exposed to camping. It just wasn't something that my family or circle of friends ever did. This would be a safe way for me to try it for the first time. Now, chances of actually being able to do it are slim because it's a lottery system, but as the NY State Lotto commercials say "Hey, you never know (Oye, nunca se sabe)."

If you're interested go HERE for info about how the lottery works. Camping with NYC Park rangers is actually offered at parks in all five boroughs on Friday and Saturday nights June, July and August. The experience is free and includes a cookout, evening activities like night hikes, and

Philipine Independence Day Parade & Street Fair

On Sunday June 6th join the Filipino community in celebrating their vibrant culture. You can watch the parade, which begins at 12pm, along Madison Avenue starting at 41st Street and heading down to Madison Square Park, where the Street Fair will be located. Living Colour's music is part of the soundtrack of my pre-teen years (watch the "Cult of Personality" video below), but I had no idea that the rock band released an album in 2009. The members did go their separate ways in 1995 but apparently reunited in 2003. I guess I have some music to catch up on and seeing their free performance can help in that effort. We can all see them on Saturday, June 5th at 3 pm in Central Park's Rumsey Playfield.

The Intrepid's Summer Movie Series

Watching movies in at great outdoor venues is one of the many pluses about summer in New York City and the venue I'm most eager to picnic & movie watch at is the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum. It boasts a fantastic view of the city's skyline at night and their film line-up is pretty frickin awesome.

May 28th - Top Gun - "I feel the need, the need for speed"
June 19th - Field of Dreams - "If you build it, they will come"
July 9th - Ghostbusters - "Who you gonna call?"
July 23rd - Goonies (LOVE IT!!!!!) - "Goonies never say die!"
August 6th - Raiders of The Lost Ark - Ok, I'm stuck but I do know Marion says "Indy" a lot
August 20th - Rocky - "Adrian!"

Space is limited so arrive early. Doors open at 7:30 at films start at sunset. You can bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets but not booze. The website actually says "no outside alcohol is permitted." That indicates to me that it will be sold on the premises.

And did I mention it's FREE?

2010 Whitney Biennial

The Biennial is the Whitney Museum's signature exhibit and showcases young American contemporary artists. The exhibit closes on May 30th so if you want to check it out you need to get the move on. The good news is that starting Wednesday, May 26th at 12 am through Friday, May 28th at 11:59 pm the museum will remain open with free admission during the late-night hours.

Admission is pay-what-you-wish
at the following times

From 12 am on Wednesday, May 26
to 9 am on Thursday, May 27

From 11 pm on Thursday, May 27
to 9 am on Friday, May 28

From 6 pm to 11:59 pm on Friday, May 28

Regular admission prices are in effect for all other hours.

Melody Gardot at Summer Stage

I first heard about Melody Gardot on CBS Sunday Morning. She's got this amazing sultry voice and a personal story the exemplifies strength and the desire to persevere. At the age of 19, she was struck by a car and suffered physical wounds that included trauma to her brain. She was not expected to make a recovery but found healing in music.

I'm stoked to have the opportunity to hear her in person as she kicks of Summer Stage 2010 in a performance with the New York Pops.

Magnificent Specimens

Stop by Chelsea Market to check out Magnificent Specimens, a collection of photographer David Mead's portraits from The World Beard and Mustache Championships. I had no idea there was such a thing but wow, would I love to check it out some day. The portraits will be on display until the end of June.

Out of Our Minds

No I'm not out of my mind, well at least not today. Out of Our Minds (OOOM) is the title of a multimedia project by Melissa Auf der Maur, former bassist for the Smashing Pumpkins and Hole. I won't try to the project, best to leave it to the artist (her description is below). The point is, if your interested Melissa will be at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe on Monday, May 24th at 7pm performing some of the music and screening the accompanying 28 minute film.

"OUT OF OUR MINDS | OOOM began as a song. It was the early stages of making this second solo album. I was in French Kiss Studios working with my solid CANADIAN collaborators. The song introduced itself as songs do, and the heart of the album was born: “Travel Out Of Our Minds, Into Our Hearts Standing By.” It was mid first decade of the 21st Century and technology had just begun to dismantle the music business towers. It was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me. The landscape changed and I began to morph my roots in visual arts with the music. All You Can Eat Mexican Buffet

My love of authentic Mexican food came about at an early age. My parents were both South American so I wasn't getting exposed at home, but I our church community was disproportionately Mexican (not surprising given our parish was Our Lady of Guadalupe). While I consider NYC one of the best places on earth for diverse food options, I often find the offerings of authentic Mexican food to be few and far between.

For a while now, I've been walking by El Ranchito del Agave (476 9th Ave, Bet. 36th & 37th streets) and keep telling myself I have to go back and try it. Yesterday, as I stood outside scanning the menu, an eager employee walked out and invited me in to take a close-up look at their weekday lunch buffet. How could I resist such an offer. From the sidewalk, you can't really see the big dining room space in the rear of the restaurant. I'm generally wary about buffet's and my fear about a Mexican Buffet was that every dish would be some variation of tortillas, cheese and beans. My fears were for naught. My tour guide apologized for what he considered a small assortment and explained that they scaled down the buffet to account for less midtown traffic due to it being a Jewish holiday. I assured him he had nothing to apologize for.

I was ecstatic to see some Mole Poblano (be still my heart) and even happier when I was given a taste and not disappointed. Wanting to provide you all with a better sense of the food quality, I purchased a plate to go ($4.99 per pound). The roasted chicken with mushroom and scallion sauce was fantastic. There was a pan of white rice but I went for the yellow rice with vegetables, which was perfectly cooked and met my requirement of not being instant (I HATE UNCLE BEN"S). Bean fans had two options: Pinto & Black. I tried the black, which were creamy and flavorful (I can't wait to try them on a torta, Mexican sandwich).

If you haven't already gotten my drift, I'm recommending you head over to this jewel of a restaurant. I can't wait until my next visit so that I can cozy up to a table and sample my little heart out.
